Why Use A Travel Agent?
Why I'm Back in Travel: The Real Scoop from Getaway By Tonya Jean Becker

Hey friends! I've been getting the same questions over and over lately: "Tonya, why did you jump back into the travel business?" and "So…how do you actually make money doing this?" If you've known me for a while, you'll remember I got my start in travel planning way back when I was just a little one. I absolutely loved it then, and honestly? I never really stopped loving it.
The travel bug bit me hard during those early years, and even when life took me in different directions, I always found myself dreaming about helping people create those once-in-a-lifetime memories. There's something magical about being part of someone's vacation story – from the initial "what if we went to Alaska?" conversation all the way to seeing their Facebook posts from the ship's deck with that glacier backdrop.
The Real Story Behind Travel Planning
Let me pull back the curtain on something most people don't realize: planning your dream vacation is way more involved than you might think. For every single trip I plan – whether it's a quick weekend getaway or an epic Alaska cruise adventure – I typically put in about 20 hours of work. Sometimes more, depending on how many moving pieces we're coordinating.

Those 20 hours include everything from researching the perfect cruise line for your family's vibe to comparing cabin categories, checking dining options, researching shore excursions, monitoring price changes, and yes – even finding out if your ship has bingo (because believe me, that question comes up more than you'd think!).
But here's the kicker that surprises most people: travel agents like me don't get paid for most of that work upfront. We don't get paid for:
• Creating detailed quotes and proposals
• Hours of research and comparison shopping
• Endless email exchanges about preferences and options
• Price monitoring and alerts
• All that behind-the-scenes magic that makes your trip perfect
When Do Travel Agents Actually Get Paid?
This might shock you, but we only earn our commission AFTER your vacation actually happens – and only if you book it through us. I literally just received payment last week for a cruise I planned back in September. That's how this industry works.
So imagine this scenario: someone reaches out asking me to compare 7 different Alaska cruise options, price out a dozen different dates, explain the differences between Princess, Holland America, and Norwegian cruise lines, research every shore excursion from whale watching to dog sledding, and break down the pros and cons of different cabin categories. I spend hours putting together the perfect recommendations, complete with pricing breakdowns and personalized suggestions.

Then they take all that information and book it themselves online to save a few bucks or get some points on their credit card. Essentially, I just worked 20+ hours for free. It's like doing volunteer consulting work, except I didn't volunteer for it.
Don't get me wrong – I totally understand the impulse to save money and hunt for deals. We're all trying to stretch our vacation dollars as far as possible. But what many people don't realize is that I can usually book the exact same trip at the exact same price they found online, with the added bonus of having a real human available to help when things go sideways.
How You Can Support Your Favorite Travel Agent
If you want to show some love to your travel agent (and help small businesses like mine thrive), here are some super easy ways to do it:
Be upfront about what you're looking for. Tell me if you're after the absolute best price, want to splurge on luxury, need something budget-friendly but reliable, or are looking for a resort where you can visit the buffet multiple times without judgment. The more honest you are about your priorities, the better I can match you with the perfect trip.
If you're shopping around with multiple agents, just let me know. Seriously, no hard feelings! I'd rather know upfront than spend hours creating the perfect proposal only to find out you've already booked elsewhere. I'll gracefully step back and cheer you on from the sidelines.

Found a great deal online? Bring it to me first. Chances are excellent that I can book the exact same package at the same price. You'll get all the benefits of that deal PLUS a real person to call when your flight gets delayed, your cruise cabin isn't what you expected, or you need to make changes. My favorite clients always say, "I know I could book this myself, but I want YOU to get the credit." Those words seriously make my entire day.
Please don't ghost me. If I send over detailed quotes and recommendations and then hear nothing but crickets for weeks, I'll assume you've been kidnapped by pirates and move on to helping the next family plan their adventure. A simple "thanks, but we decided to go a different direction" or "we're putting travel on hold for now" is all I need.
It's About More Than Just Bookings
Here's what I think sets working with a travel agent apart from booking online: it's about relationships and peace of mind. When you book that Alaska cruise through me, you're not just getting a transaction – you're getting someone who's invested in making sure your trip is absolutely amazing.
I remember every detail about my clients' preferences. I know that Sarah gets seasick easily so we need a cabin midship on a lower deck. I remember that the Johnson family celebrates their anniversary every August and always wants a balcony cabin with champagne waiting. I know that first-time cruisers need extra hand-holding with packing lists and what to expect.

When something goes wrong – and let's be honest, sometimes things do go sideways with travel – you have someone in your corner who knows your trip inside and out. I've helped clients navigate everything from weather delays to medical emergencies to last-minute changes. Try getting that level of personal service from a booking website.
The Small Business Reality
Every time someone chooses to book with Getaway By Tonya Jean Becker instead of going the DIY route, it makes a real difference for my small business. Every like, share, and referral matters more than you might realize. Small businesses feel every bit of support from our community, and I'm incredibly grateful for clients who understand the value of that personal touch.
I'm not trying to guilt anyone into booking with me – there are legitimate reasons why someone might choose to book independently. But I do want people to understand how the travel agent world actually works behind the scenes. We're not just pushing buttons and taking a cut – we're putting in real time, expertise, and care to make your vacation dreams come true.
Let's Plan Your Next Adventure
Whether you're dreaming of watching whales in Alaska, exploring the Mediterranean, or finding the perfect family resort in the Caribbean, I'd love to help make it happen. I promise to bring my whole heart to planning your trip, along with all the caffeine necessary to research every detail until it's perfect.
The travel world has changed a lot over the years, but one thing remains the same: there's nothing quite like the excitement of planning a new adventure. I'm back in this business because I genuinely love being part of those special moments – from the initial planning stages all the way through your "I can't believe we're really here!" photos.
